What is Bánh Tráng Nướng?
The last time I was in Vietnam, I couldn’t get enough of this delicious Vietnamese pizza snack out on the streets in Ho Chi Minh City.
Bánh Tráng Nướng or Vietnamese pizza as known in the west is a popular Vietnamese street food that has overtaken the country of Vietnam by storm in the past decade or so.
You’ll be hard pressed to find any popular busy tourist area in the country without any street vendors selling the popular snack.
Banh trang nuong is a delicious yet very affordable snack found in Vietnam. It usually costs no more than $2 but can often times be had for much cheaper, especially in less touristy areas where sellers don’t mark up their prices for unsuspecting tourists.
But fret not if you don’t live in Vietnam, because today I’m going to share with you this delicious Vietnamese pizza recipe that you can make at home all without needing to travel all the way to Vietnam.
This bánh tráng nướng recipe is easy and fast to make, but tastes amazing ☺
Here’s how to make Vietnamese Pizza.
Ingredients
- Vietnamese rice paper
- 1 egg (can substitute with quail eggs)
- 1 piece of laughing cow cheese
- 1/3 cup of chopped green onions
- 1/2 hot dog (chopped)
- tsp of fried shallots
- 1 Tbsp of Japanese kewpie mayo
- 1 Tbsp of sweet chili hot sauce
- Optional:
- Minced ground pork meat
- Pork floss
Ingredient Notes
Rice paper: I suggest that you try to look for a larger type of rice paper so that way, you can add in more toppings and it also makes it a lot easier to fold the rice paper over itself as well without worrying about toppings falling out.
Sweet chili hot sauce: For the sweet chili hot sauce, I’m using a Vietnamese brand called chinsu which is very popular in Vietnam. This chili sauce isn’t overly spicy and not overly sweet either, making it the perfect hot sauce to use. If you can’ find this type of hot sauce then I suggest you pick one that isn’t overly sweet.
Substitutions
Rice paper: If you can’t find the larger rice papers that are sold at Asian supermarkets, then using smaller rice paper is fine. I don’t recommend that you start substituting the rice paper with tortillas as that has a completely different texture and now it is no longer “Vietnamese”.
Laughing cow cheese: If you like, you can substitute the laughing cow cheese with cream cheese or some type of cheese that is smooth and creamy.
Toppings: small chunks of ham works well as a substitute for the hotdogs and minced pork. You can also substitute ground chicken/beef for the ground pork as well.
Directions
Heat a flat frying pan over low heat and add in 1 piece of rice paper once the pan has been sufficiently heated.
Next add in your chopped green onions & 1 egg on top of the rice paper. Immediately start stirring and mixing everything together making sure to get the egg and green onions evenly spread out all over the rice paper.
Next add in 1 piece of laughing cow cheese on top of the rice paper and then mix it well with everything.
Then add in your chopped hotdog or sausage onto the rice paper and mix it well with everything along with the fried shallots.
Finally, we’re going to add in our hot sauce + kewpie mayo on top of our rice paper.
At this point you have a choice, you can either cook the rice paper flat down as is or you can fold it in half and then cook each side separately until it’s golden brown underneath.
Regardless of which option you choose, we will now turn up the heat on our stove to medium/ medium high to get that nice crispy outer edges on our rice paper.
Once the rice paper has turned golden brown, remove it from your stove and serve it.
