Bacon Fried Rice Ingredient Notes

Bacon fried rice ingredients shot

Eggs: Soft and fluffy eggs add a nice contrast to the crispiness of the bacon. You can use whatever type of eggs you prefer, such as omega-3, grass-fed, or regular eggs.

Leftover long-grain white jasmine rice: A key ingredient for making fried rice. Leftover white rice is much easier to work with compared to fresh cooked white rice.

Shallots and garlic: Adds flavor and aroma to our fried rice.

Green onions: The dark green part of the green onions is added as a garnish to the fried rice, while the white and light green part is used to infuse flavor into the fried rice.

Bacon: The star ingredient in this fried rice recipe. The bacon adds a nice crunch texture to the fried rice and packs a ton of hickory-smoked flavor to the fried rice. The bacon fat is also used to add additional flavoring to the fried rice.

Light soy sauce: Come on, you can’t make fried rice without adding soy sauce. The light soy sauce adds umami flavor and saltiness to our fried rice.

Black pepper: Adds a little kick to the fried rice. It’s best to use fresh, crushed black pepper.

White granulated sugar: The sugar helps balance out all of the saltiness from the bacon and soy sauce.

Substitutions

  • Leftover long-grain white jasmine rice: You can use fresh, cooked white jasmine rice.
  • Bacon: You can substitute it with another protein like chicken or pork.
  • Black pepper: You can substitute it with white pepper.
  • Shallots: Minced garlic or onions would be a good substitute for the shallots.

Tips

  • For the best texture, it is highly recommended to use overnight-cooked leftover rice.
  • Try to separate the rice when stir-frying it in the wok. The rice is nearly done when you start hearing “popping” and “cracking sounds,” and the rice is separated and no longer clumped together.
  • You can reduce the amount of bacon fat left over from frying the bacon if you want to cut down on calories; however, you should leave at least a little bit of the bacon oil, as that adds a lot of flavor to the fried rice.
  • Using fresh-cooked rice makes your fried rice extra fragrant.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

I Don’t Have Any Leftover White Rice. Can I Use Fresh Cooked White Rice Instead?

Yes, you can!

You’ll need to experiment though, with the amount of water that you use to cook the white rice, you’ll want your rice to not be overly dry nor wet when using it to cook fried rice.

If it’s too dry, it will taste very dry and not very good.

If it’s too wet, then it will become mushy and stick together.

A good starting point is using a 1:1 ratio of water to rice, but this will vary between brands and types of rice, so you will need to experiment.

After you are done cooking your white rice, take it out of the rice cooker and lay it out on a tray, and then use a fan to cool down the rice. This will help reduce the amount of moisture in your rice.

Once the rice has cooled down, try to separate the rice to minimize the chance of it sticking together when cooking.

Why Is My Fried Rice Mushy?

You added too much water to your rice when you cooked it.

Cooked white rice should not be mushy and clumpy if the right amount of water was used.

Can I Add Additional Ingredients to This Fried Rice Recipe, Such as Vegetables?

Yes!

Frozen mixed vegetables or even fresh carrots, peas, yellow sweet corn, and iceberg lettuce will work well with this recipe.

Can I Use Brown Rice Instead of White Long-Grain Jasmine Rice for This Recipe?

You can, but it won’t taste nearly as good as using white jasmine rice.

I’m Allergic to Eggs, What Can I Substitute It With?

Leave it out!

Can I Freeze My Leftover Fried Rice?

Yes, you can!

Place the leftover fried rice in an airtight container or zip lock bag and then freeze for up to 1 month.
